Pilates and Body Conditioning for Dancers

A strong center is vital to the performing health and longevity of a dancer/performer. Students are introduced to the Pilates method through a study of its founder Joseph Pilates, its history and development over the years, and the six principles of Pilates: Breath, Centering, Control, Concentration, Flow, and Precision. Students learn the basic level exercises within the original 34 mat exercises adding more as their strength, flexibility, and ability to stabilize improve.  Students work to build up a strong foundation through which to assess their own bodies and their individual needs, laying the framework for deeper somatic exploration in future practices and throughout their careers. A series of 'pre-Pilates' exercises will also be addressed to empower students to work as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Workshop length: 90 minutes to a full semester
